PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's starting pitcher Aaron Trolia allowed only one hit through six innings, but Southern California's late scoring gave the Trojans the 4-2 victory Friday, at Bailey-Brayton Field in the first of a three-game Pacific-10 conference baseball series.

"I was extremely pleased with Trolia," WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. "Both starting pitchers performed very well, obviously with no runs scored over six innings."

Trolia (4-3) pitched seven innings for WSU (21-12, 3-4 Pac-10), allowing two runs, one earned, and four hits while striking out four batters.

Ian Kennedy (5-2) pitched the first seven innings for USC (18-17, 4-3 Pac-10), striking out eight batters, while giving up one run that was earned and six hits. Josh Rummonds earned the save, pitching the final inning. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when USC took the lead, scoring two runs. Jeff Clement scored an unearned run when he was safe on a Cougar error and later scored when Baron Frost singled up the middle. Billy Hart then drove home Joey Metropoulos with a single up the middle.

The Cougars answered with one run in the seventh on Justin Hart's single to left center that drove home Grant Richardson, who walked to lead off the inning. Hart led WSU batters, who out-hit USC 9-to-7, by going 3-for-4.

USC added its final two runs in the eighth when Blake Sharpe singled to short to score Cyle Hankerd, who singled two batters earlier. Metropoulos hit a sacrifice fly to score Michael Moon, who advanced to third on a passed ball.

Trailing 4-1, with one out in the eight, Richardson hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Kaeo Rubin, who walked to lead off the inning.

With only one out, the Cougs had two runners on base in the ninth, but would fail to capitalize on the opportunity.

WSU will return to Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday at 3:00 p.m. to take on Southern California in the second of a three-game conference series.
