Freshman Hurler Leads Cougars to Series Victory

PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Tanner Chleborad blanked Utah for 7 2/3 innings and struck out eight as Washington State defeated Utah 6-0 in Pac-12 baseball, Sunday.

The innings pitched and strikeouts were each a career high for Chleborad (2-0). The right-hander threw 70 of his 105 pitches for strikes and set down 12-straight during one stretch.

The victory for Washington State (18-14, 5-6 Pac-12) came in the rubber match-up of the three-game series with the Utes (9-25, 5-10 Pac-12).

"We responded well to yesterday's loss," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Tanner was very good today. You have to win series in this conference and we were able to do that today."

The Cougars struck first with two runs in the second against Utah starter Mitch Watrous (2-1). Patrick Claussen singled with one out. Collin Slaybaugh added a two-out single and Kyle Johnson walked to load the bases. Jason Monda followed with an RBI-infield single and Slaybaugh came around to score on a throwing error during the play.

In the fourth, Ian Sagdal led off with a single. With two outs, Monda singled and Tommy Richards reached on an error to that allowed Sagdal to score and give Washington State a 3-0 lead.

Johnson singled and stole second in the sixth in front of a run-scoring double by Monda. The Cougars capped the scoring with two runs in the seventh. Taylor Ard singled with one out and scored on a double by Adam Nelubowich. Sagdal's double with two outs plated pinch runner Nate Blackham.

GAME NOTES
Washington State scored 10 of its 18 runs in the series with two outs...Cougars recorded their third shutout, most since 2009 (three)...Washington State plays at Gonzaga, Tuesday at 6 pm.
