WENATCHEE, Wash. - Shea Vucinich delivered a two-run single and Matt Fanelli added a two-run home run in the eighth inning as Washington State rallied past Seattle 8-5 in nonconference baseball, Tuesday.

In front of 1,353 fans at Paul Thomas, Sr. Field, the Cougars (18-11) entered the home half of the eighth trailing 5-4. Cody Bartlett led off with a single against Seattle (4-23) reliever Max Whieldon (1-5). Paul Clingan dropped down a sacrifice bunt and reached first when Whieldon could not field the ball cleanly. One out later, both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Vucinich then looped a single into right-center field over the drawn-in infield to give WSU a 6-5 lead. Two batters later, Fanelli launched a shot over the left field wall to put the Cougars on top 8-5. Adam Conley worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save.

"We had a tremendous crowd tonight and we appreciate the Wenatchee community supporting us," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We did not play our best baseball, but we competed and found a way to win."

The Redhawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second and the Cougars tied the game with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the frame. Michael Weber opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a one-out single by Patrick Claussen. Ryan Peterson drove home Weber with a single and the Cougars tied the game on a two-out bases loaded walk to Garry Kuykendall.

Seattle scored two runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead and the Cougars responded with a run in the fourth and one in the sixth to tie the game. In the fourth, Bartlett singled with one out and with two outs, Kuykendall beat out a bunt for a hit and Bartlett scored on the play via a Seattle throwing error. In the sixth, Bartlett walked, Clingan singled and Kuykendall tied the game 4-4 with a RBI-ground out.

The Redhawks scored the go-ahead run in the seventh and had runners at first and third with one out in the eighth when Paris Shewey (3-1), the fourth of five Cougar pitchers in the game, came into the game. Shewey squelched the threat with a pair of strikeouts setting the stage for WSU's rally in the bottom of the eighth.

WSU returns to Pullman to host Gonzaga, Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
