WSU Falls To Huskies 11-7
April 14, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State had 11 hits and held a one-run lead after six innings, but it was not enough to fend-off host Washington in an 11-7 loss Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
The Cougars (14-20 overall, 2-7 in the Pac-10) rallied from a 5-4 deficit after four innings by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Huskies (15-17-1, 3-3) scored one run in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth to pull-out the win.
Brandon Hundt (4-3) received the loss for WSU. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs, five earned. David Dowling (1-3) notched the win for Washington.
The game was delayed by nearly an hour because of rain, but it didn't prevent WSU from striking early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Hart's first career triple brought home Evan Hecker to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Hart scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff LaRue. The Huskies responded by notching two runs in their half of the first to knot the score at two.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Washington tallied three runs in the bottom of the frame, taking a 5-4 advantage.
WSU then came back in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Falkenborg singled to left field to plate Mortimer and Hart. Gates then grounded out, but it was enough to score LaRue, giving WSU a 7-5 lead.
The Huskies added a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Cougar lead to 7-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, with the bases loaded, Hundt balked, allowing Tyler Davidson to score the tying run. After striking out Aaron Hathaway, Hundt then walked Greg Isaacson, forcing home Kyle Larsen to score the go-ahead run. Billy Gorrell replaced Hundt and struck out the next batter to end the inning.
While WSU went scoreless in top of the eighth and ninth, the Huskies tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 11-7 lead. Dowling allowed just one hit in the ninth to seal his first win of the season.
The Cougars return home next week with a three-game series against USC. The two teams will open their set Friday at 6 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
