Final Stats

Spokane, Wash. - The Cougar pitching staff combined to strikeout 10 Gonzaga batters as the Washington State baseball team defeated the Bulldogs 4-1 Tuesday at Avista Stadium. The Cougars now lead the season series against the regional rival 3-1 with one game in the series remaining.

WSU's (17-20, 0-9 Pacific-10 Conference) Jayson Miller (2-3) started his fifth game of the season for the Cougs, earning his second win of the year. The freshman from Richland, Wash. threw six innings, holding the Bulldogs (20-13, 7-4 West Coast Conference) to one run on three hits, while striking out three batters. Senior Dane Renkert earned his third save of the season throwing the ninth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Brett Sommer and Travis Webb also saw time out of the pen for WSU.

Gonzaga starting pitcher Jay Bryner (3-3) took the loss, throwing six innings and allowing two Cougar runs on three hits.

Jay Miller and Kaeo Rubin led the Cougars offensively, each driving home a pair of runs. Miller's two runs batted in came on a two-run long ball to left field in the eighth inning, his third home run and 50th hit of the season.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Zach Franklin, who was hit by a pitch to reach base, scored on a ground out by Rubin. The pair combined again to score the eventual game-winning run in the top of the fifth inning when Rubin drove home Franklin with a sacrifice fly. WSU added two insurance runs in the eighth inning on Miller's home run to finalize the score at 4-1.

Gonzaga's Kiel Thibault drove home Mike Terry with a single to center in the third inning for the Bulldogs only run of the game. The Zags threatened to post additional runs in the third, but failed to plate anymore Bulldogs, leaving the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Cougars will get a rest this weekend, taking a bye-week before closing out the non-conference season series with Gonzaga Tuesday April 19 at Bailey-Brayton Field at 6 p.m.
