OSU Scores Early In 11-3 Win Over WSU
April 12, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- - Washington State, despite collecting 12 hits, couldn't turn those hits into runs and lost to host Oregon state 11-3 Saturday in Pacific-10 Conference action at Goss Stadium. WSU starter Bryce Chamberlin (3-4) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings in the losing effort for WSU (10-24 overall, 2-6 Pac-10). Stephen Copeland (3-3) pitched five innings, allowing one run on six hits to notch the win for OSU (16-16, 3-5). Andy Baldwin tossed four innings to record the save. Jay Miller and Derek Bruce led the Cougars with three hits each. Bruce hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo blast in the top of the eighth inning. Aaron Mathews led the Beavers with a 5-for-5, four-RBI day. OSU scored five runs in the bottom of the second, before WSU responded with Robert Stahlke's two-out sacrifice fly in the fifth that plated Miller. The Beavers added two more scores in the sixth, taking a 7-1 lead. The Cougars had an opportunity to cut the OSU lead in the top of the seventh, as Miller and Jeremy Farrar led-off the inning with back-to-back singles. But Baldwin settled down and retired the next three WSU batters. The Beavers scored twice in their half of the inning, extending the lead to 9-2. In the top of the eighth, the Cougars answered with Bruce's leadoff homer to left field. But after Jeff LaRue one-out double, Baldwin got Justin Hart and Miller to each fly-out.
OSU added two more runs in the eighth. In the Cougar ninth, Grant Richardson hit a one-out solo home run, his fifth of the year, but WSU would produce just a Brandon Reddinger single afterward.
The teams complete the series tomorrow at noon. The Cougars are expected to send Aaron MacKenzie to the mound.
