WSU Beats Oregon State 10-6

CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Washington State, behind the pitching performance of starting pitcher Tony Banaszak, beat host Oregon State 10-6 Friday in Pac-10 Conference action at Goss Stadium.
Banaszak (2-7) pitched 8.2 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on 11 hits to notch the win for WSU (10-23 overall, 2-5 in the Pac-10). Ben Rowe (3-3) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits in the losing effort for OSU (15-16, 2-5).
At the plate, the Cougars were led by Justin Hart's 3-for-3 day and Grant Richardson's 3-for-5, two-RBI performance. Richardson also hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run blast in the top of the fifth inning. Three Oregon State players had multiple-hit games.
WSU raced out to a 4-0 lead after three innings.
In the first, the Cougars scored two unearned runs. Jeremy Farrar and Jay Miller both scored on a throwing error by OSU third baseman Andy Jarvis with two outs in the inning. In the second, Hart tripled to left centerfield scoring Jon Baeder from first base, while in the third, Derek Bruce reached on a fielder's choice, plating Richardson from third base.
The Beavers added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the WSU lead to 4-2. But the Cougars responded in the fifth, when Richardson's two-out shot to left field plated Farrar, giving WSU a 6-2 lead.
OSU added a run in the bottom of the sixth, before the teams combined for seven runs in a wild ninth inning.
The Cougars plated four in their half of the ninth. With one out and the bases loaded, Baeder was walked, scoring Farrar. Dustin Realini was then walked, bringing home Richardson. Jeff LaRue capped the WSU scoring binge with a single up the middle, plating Bruce from third and Baeder from second.
The Beavers made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs off Banaszak with two outs, all of which were unearned, before Nick Kenyon came in to nail down the win.
The two teams continue their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Bryce Chamberlin (3-3) is expected take the mound for WSU.
