PULLMAN, Wash. - For eight innings Sunday, Washington State had one hit and trailed No. 16 UCLA 2-0. In the ninth, the Cougars (13-14, 2-7 Pac-10) came up with three runs on five hits to stun the Bruins (16-11, 7-2 Pac-10) 3-2 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Jason Monda's single off Mitchell Beacom (0-2) plated Derek Jones to cap the rally and set off a celebration in the middle of the diamond.

UCLA starter Adam Plutko had seven strikeouts and a one-hit shutout before giving up a leadoff single to Collin Slaybaugh in the ninth. Plutko was replaced by Nick Vander Tuig after throwing 93 pitches. Cody Bartlett greeted Vander Tuig with an infield single off the right-hander's glove and Brett Jacobs dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third.

Taylor Ard, the leading-RBI man on the Cougar squad, followed with a single up the middle to score Slaybaugh and pinch runner Nate Blackham and tie the game 2-2. Beacom was summoned from the UCLA bullpen to create a lefty-lefty match-up with Jones.

With Jones at bat, Ard tried to advance on a ball that bounced in front of Steve Rodriguez, but a strong throw by the Bruins' backstop resulted in the second out of the inning.

Jones followed with a triple off the wall in center field that put the winning run 90-feet away. After an intentional walk to Matt Argyropoulos, Monda won another lefty-lefty duel with a single into the left-center field gap.

"We needed this win and it was a big one for us," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Hopefully this will give us some momentum going forward."

Paris Shewey (1-0) struck out three in two shutout innings to earn the victory. J.D. Leckenby recorded seven outs without allowing a hit or a run after James Wise gave up two runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings.

The Cougars conclude their homestand against Gonzaga Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
