Arizona State Evens Series with Cougar Baseball
April 10, 2010
PULLMAN, Wash. - Arizona State recorded 13 hits and defeated Washington State 11-7 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday. With the victory, the top-ranked Sun Devils (28-2, 6-2 Pac-10) evened the three-game series with Washington State (16-11, 2-3 Pac-10). "I want people to see us play good baseball, and I don't think we've done that since the Utah series (last month)," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "But, I know we are capable of playing good baseball and we still have a chance to win a conference series." Arizona State chased WSU starter Travis Cook (0-2) with two runs in the first, one in the second and another in the third. The Cougars scored their first run of the game in the fourth on a Derek Jones double followed by a Matt Fanelli sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly by Michael Weber. The Sun Devils essentially put the game away with a six-run sixth against the WSU bullpen to take a 10-1 lead. The Cougars picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning. Fanelli plated one with a ground out and Patrick Claussen scored on a wild pitch. Both teams scored a run in the seventh with a single by Claussen driving in WSU's tally. Trailing 11-4 entering the home half of the ninth, the Cougars scored three times. Weber drew a bases loaded walk and Ryan Peterson delivered a two-run single to account for the game's final score. Merrill Kelly (7-0) went seven innings on the mound for Arizona State to earn the victory and Jake Barrett picked up his second save when he retired J.K. Dykes on a ground out to end the game. The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon. WSU NOTES
