Cougars Fall To No. 6 Arizona 13-0

Pullman, Wash. - Freshmen Jim Murphy and Matt Thomas each recorded two hits as the Washington State baseball team fell 13-0 to Pacific-10 Conference foe No. 6 Arizona in the first game of a three-game conference series Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The game marks the first time this season the Cougars were held scoreless.
WSU (16-18, 0-7 Pac-10) starting pitcher Dane Renkert (1-2) took the loss in his first start of the season. The co-captain allowed six runs, two earned, on four hits in two innings of work. Jayson Miller, Steve Kost and Reese Baker all saw time out of the bullpen for WSU.
John Meloan (6-0) earned the win for Arizona (22-10, 6-1 Pac-10) going eight innings, allowing no runs on four hits, while striking out seven Cougar batters.
Murphy and Thomas each recorded two singles to lead WSU offensively. Murphy's singles improved his team-leading batting average to .402 and extended his current hit streak to 13 games. Thomas hit singles up the middle in the third and eighth innings for his third multiple hit game of the season. Jason Freeman recorded the only other Cougar hit in the game with a single in the sixth inning.
The Wildcats used four long balls to score six of their 13 runs, including a three-run shot to right by Nick Hundly in the second inning, which gave Arizona a early 6-0 lead. Jason Donald led Arizona with two solo shots, one in the fifth and another in the seventh and Bill Rhinehart hit a solo home run in the ninth.
Arizona posted two runs in the first with a run-scoring single by Jordan Brown and a sacrifice fly by Chris Frey. In the second, the Cats added another four runs with Hundley's three-run shot and a double by Trevor Crowe that scored Bryan Kervin.
The Wildcats scored another run in the third to extend their lead to 7-0 with a single up the middle by Crowe. In the fifth, Arizona added two runs to the board using Donald's first home run of the night and a run-scoring triple by Crowe. The Cats posted three more runs in the seventh with Donald's second home run and a two-run single by Brown.
Jimmy Freeman (6-2) will get the starting nod on the mound for the Cougs Saturday when they face off in the middle game of the three-game series against Arizona at Bailey-Brayton Field. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
