PULLMAN, Wash. - UCLA's Gerrit Cole and Washington State's Adam Conley each threw a complete game and the 16th-ranked Bruins defeated the host Cougars 3-1 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball Friday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Cole (4-2) gave up five hits, struck out seven and walked one. The lone run against him was unearned. Conley (4-3) yielded nine hits, struck out seven and walked two.

"That was the best game we have played in the Pac-10 this year," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Gerrit Cole is one of the best pitchers in the country and Adam Conley went toe-to-toe with him. Obviously I am bothered by the loss, but I am proud of our effort."

UCLA (15-10, 6-1 Pac-10) scored three times in the third. A single, sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and double plated the first run. After a walk, a misjudged fly ball resulted in a two-run double and the Bruins took a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Brett Jacobs led off with a double for the Cougars (12-13, 1-6 Pac-10) and took third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Taylor Ard drove in his team-leading 26th run with a ground out. Washington State threatened in the fifth when Jason Monda doubled and moved to third on a ground out by Tommy Richards. However, Cole responded by striking out Patrick Claussen and retiring Cody Bartlett on a ground out.

Conley kept the Cougars in the game allowing only five balls out of the infield after the third inning. The southpaw threw 87 of his 130 pitches for strikes.

The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m.
