Cougars Clobber Redhawks
April 6, 2012
PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Joe Pistorese pitched seven strong innings and Washington State's offense exploded in a 19-1 win over Seattle in nonconference baseball, Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Pistorese (2-2) blanked the Redhawks (14-12) on three hits while striking out a career-high seven. His battery mate, freshman P.J. Jones, knocked in a career-best five runs as part of a 3-for-5 effort for Washington State (15-12).
"Any time we win a game, it's because we do something on the mound," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Joe was great and filled up the strike zone."
Redshirt-junior Taylor Ard started the scoring with an RBI-single in the first inning off Seattle starter Grant Gunning (3-3). In the third, senior Derek Jones homered with two outs followed by back-to-back doubles by Ard and senior Patrick Claussen. The home run for Jones was the 40th of his career, tying the Cougar all-time record held by Jeff Hooper (1984-87).
Derek Jones and Ard singled to begin the sixth and both men scored on a two-out triple by P.J. Jones. Washington State added two runs in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Claussen and a wild pitch that allowed Derek Jones to score and increase the Washington State lead to 12-0.
In the eighth, the Cougars capped their scoring with a seven-run frame. P.J. Jones led off with a single and scored on a triple by freshman Ty Jackson. Freshman Yale Rosen's sacrifice fly scored Jackson and Rosen was safe at second when the ball was dropped in left field. Rosen moved to third on a fly out and scored on a single by freshman Jordan Copeland.
With two outs, sophomore Stetson Olson and Claussen walked to load the bases. Freshman Ian Sagdal delivered and RBI-single to score Copeland. Seattle's bullpen then handed Washington State three runs with a walk to P.J. Jones before hitting Jackson and Rosen.
The Redhawks picked up their lone run in the ninth a walk, double and sacrifice fly against Jackson.
