PULLMAN, Wash. - Ian Sagdal's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Washington State to a 2-1 nonconference baseball victory over Seattle at Bailey-Brayton Field, Thursday.

With the game tied 1-1, Taylor Ard led off the bottom of the ninth with a double against Seattle (14-11) reliever Garrett Anderson (3-2) and was replaced by pinch runner Nate Blackham. With one out, pinch hitter Ty Jackson was intentionally walked and Jordan Copeland pinch ran for him. Patrick Claussen worked a walk to load the bases setting the stage for Sagdal's heroics.

"The corners were in and the middle infielders were playing back for a double play, so I knew I had to get a ball in the air," Sagdal said. "It's a big win for us to get the series going."

The Cougars (14-12) trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the eighth. Sagdal opened the inning with an infield single against Redhawks' starter Brandon Kizer and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Collin Slaybaugh. Kyle Johnson singled on the first pitch he saw to score Sagdal with the tying run.

Washington State starter J.D. Leckenby limited Seattle to one run on four hits in eight innings of work, but did not factor into the decision. Scott Simon (2-0) pitched the ninth and earned the victory.

"J.D. was pretty good tonight," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Our bullpen had been pretty taxed, so his effort was a big help for those guys."
