Cougars Drop 13-7 Game To ASU
April 6, 2002
No. 14 Arizona State scored seven runs in the final two innings to defeat Washington State 13-7 Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The loss drops the Cougars to 13-17 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10. Arizona State goes to 21-12 and 5-3.
The Cougars rallied from a 6-1 deficit after three innings by posting five runs in the fourth to tie the game at six, then took a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning.
Reliever Billy Gorrell (0-4) received the loss for the Cougars. Gorrell pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs. Ryan Schroyer (2-1) recorded the win for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State got to WSU starter Brandon Hundt early. The Sun Devils notched three runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third. Hundt pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up six runs and nine hits.
WSU's lone score during ASU's early run came in the bottom of the first inning on Bookie Gates' sacrifice fly that plated Justin Hart.
The Cougars, however, refused to go away. In the bottom of the fourth, WSU forced the Sun Devils to use three pitchers. Derek Bruce got the rally started with an RBI double off starter Bryce Kartler that scored Jeff LaRue and Wes Falkenborg. Collin Henderson scored Steve Mortimer on a sacrifice fly off new pitcher Josh Perrault. Evan Hecker scored Bruce on an RBI single to centerfield. Falkenborg then walked with the bases loaded to bring home Hecker and knot the score at six. Jared Liebeck came in to replace Perrault and record the third out of the inning.
WSU took its first lead of the game three innings later, when a throwing error by Sun Devil second baseman Steve Garrabrants scored Tyson Boston from third base to give the Cougars a 7-6 lead after seven innings.
Gorrell struggled in the eighth, walking the bases loaded before giving up a double to Ryan McKenna that cleared the bases and gave ASU a 9-7 lead. Lanakila Niles replaced Gorrell in the ninth and was charged with four runs in the inning.
The two teams meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field for the rubber match of the three-game series. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Northwest.
