PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State Cougars beat No. 29 Birmingham-Southern 16-4 Sunday, with the help of two home runs by Grant Richardson, including a solo homer that led off a 10-run fifth inning, to sweep the three-game series at Bailey-Brayton Field.

In his first start this season, Garrett Alwert (2-1) earned the win for WSU (19-8), throwing 107 pitches over six innings, allowing three runs, all earned, and nine hits. Aaron Trolia earned his first save of the season, pitching three innings, while striking out five batters and allowing one solo home run in the eighth inning.

Wes Letson (4-2) took the loss for the Panthers (19-9), pitching the first four innings of the game, allowing 11 hits, 11 runs, all earned.

"You have to be extremely happy with not only hitting, but all aspects of our offense," WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. "We were able to execute all aspects of our offense, from the short game to the long ball to base running, as well as when we were in leverage counts to drive the baseball in."

Cougar bats were hot, with six batters having multiple hit games to account for 12 of WSU's 16 runs. Kaeo Rubin led WSU, going 4-for-5, scoring two runs and driving home one, while extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Richardson was 2-for-2, driving home four runs and scoring three. Jason Freeman drove home three runs with his first home run as a Cougar while going 2-of-3 at the plate. Brandon Reddinger hit his second home run of the season, a solo homer, and was 2-for-3. He drove in three runs and scored three runs. Justin McClure drove home two runs with three hits in four attempts while scoring two runs. Zach McAngus went a perfect 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in one run.

Matt Barber was the only Panther to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and single. He scored once. Ryan Sciacca, who pinch hit for Michael Cline, hit a solo home run to lead off the eighth.

After trailing for the first time in the series, WSU took a 3-1 lead in the first with a run-scoring double by Jay Miller to bring home Rubin, who led off the inning with a single. Richardson then hit his first homer, driving home Miller, in his second multiple home run game of the week.

The Cougars added two more runs in the second with Reddinger's solo home run and a sacrifice fly by Richardson to bring home McClure, who reached base on a single.

WSU took a 6-2 lead in the third when McClure singled home McAngus, who led off the inning with a single through the left side.

The Cougars sealed the win in the fifth inning, scoring 10 runs, eight of which came before the first out. Following Richardson's home run, WSU added two more runs when Reddinger hit a two-run single to score Jeremy Farrar and McAngus. Collin Henderson, who reached first on a bunt, scored when McClure bunted for a single. Freeman's homer accounted for the next three runs, driving home Rubin and McClure. Following the first out, Richardson, who was hit by a pitch later scored on a single by McAngus. The final Cougar run came on a fielder's choice to score Farrar, who had singled.

The Panther's scored early with one run in the first when Jared Walker doubled to score Cline, who earlier singled down the right field line. BSC added another run in the second when Pat Mizerany singled up the middle to score Matt Barber. The third run of the game for the Panthers came when Michael Wydner scored when Cline grounded into a double play in the fifth inning.

The Cougars' next action will be against the LCSC Warriors Tuesday, at 2 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
