PULLMAN, Wash. - For much of Friday night, the Washington State baseball team looked like it was on the wrong end of a bad April Fools joke. One half inning changed all that.

The Cougars (11-10, 1-3 Pacific-10) scored eight times in the bottom of the eighth to stun No. 11 Stanford (11-7, 0-1 Pac-10) 10-8 in the opener of a three-game series at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Washington State fell behind 8-0 as Cougar ace Adam Conley was knocked around for eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits in five and one-third innings, his shortest outing of the year.

Washington State chipped away in the sixth against Cardinal with a pair of runs against Stanford starter Mark Appel. Brett Jacobs opened with a walk and scored on a one-out double by Taylor Ard. With two outs, Jason Monda plated Ard to make the score 8-2.

In the eighth, Derek Jones led off with a single against reliever A.J. Vanegas. Jones scored on a double by Ard and Matt Argyropoulos singled to put runners at the corners. Monda singled off Scott Snodgress (2-2) to knock in Ard and cut the Cardinal's lead to 8-4.

With one out, pinch hitter Stetson Olson walked to load the bases. A single by Cody Bartlett scored Argyropoulos and another run came off on a fielder's choice off the bat of Paul Clingan. Jacobs singled to make it 8-7 and Chris Reed entered from the bullpen to face Jones. On a 1-2 count, Reed hung a slider and Jones hammered it into the Pullman night over the right field wall for his team-leading fourth home run of the season.

"Jones gets all the credit for the home run and he deserves it," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "But we had contributions from a lot of guys tonight. Stetson Olson worked a walk, Paul Clingan put a ball and play and his hustle kept the inning alive and Kellen Camus got some huge outs for us out of the bullpen."

Camus (1-0) pitched two and two-thirds innings of shutout relief while striking out four in just his second-collegiate outing. Paris Shewey set the Cardinal down 1-2-3 in the ninth for his fifth save.

The series continues Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
