April 2, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Brian Chavez had a home run, triple and drove in five runs as San Francisco posted an 8-1 win over Washington State in a nonconference game Monday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 16-13 for the season while USF improves to 16-15.
The Dons scored first as Brian Chavez connected for a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the second off Jayson Miller. The Cougars got one run back in the third as they pushed across an unearned run. Zach Borba led off with a single and one out later stole third before coming home on an infield error off the bat of Greg Lagreid. That was all for WSU as the Cougars managed just two hits after the fourth inning.
USF added a run in the seventh then broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning. Chavez had a three-run triple in the frame while Mitchell Bialosky and Joey Rainey also added RBIs.
Sophomore Jeremy Johnson started for WSU as he was making his 2007 debut after battling injuries during the first two months of the season. On a limited pitch count, Johnson faced four batters in the first, his only inning of work, walking one while not surrendering a hit. The Cougars used five pitchers on the day with Jayson Miller suffering the loss as he went five innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts.
