IRVINE, Calif. - - Washington State received eight solid innings from starter Aaron MacKenzie in a 4-2 win against host UC Irvine Sunday at Anteater Ballpark.
MacKenzie (2-3) allowed two runs on six hits in his best effort of the season for WSU (8-19). Nick Kenyon pitched a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season. Michael Koehler (1-3) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit in the losing effort for the Anteaters (11-19).
The win gave the Cougars their first series victory of the season.
At the plate, Jay Miller was 2-of-5 with and RBI, while Wes Falkenborg was 2-for-4, hitting his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning. Jon Horwitz and Matt Fisher had two hits each to lead UC Irvine.
The WSU lead held until the Anteaters added a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score.
Falkenborg's homer in the sixth gave the Cougars another short-lived lead, as UC Irvine knotted the score at two in the bottom of the eighth.
WSU took the lead for good with a two-run ninth. With two outs, Jon Baeder doubled to right centerfield and scored when the next batter, Robert Stahlke, singled. Miller followed with a single to right centerfield, scoring Zapper McGrath, who pinch-ran for Stahlke.
Kenyon allowed one hit in the ninth, but quickly ended the Anteater threat, getting the final two outs on routine fly-outs to nail down the win.
The Cougars make a trip to Spokane Tuesday, where they'll meet Gonzaga at 2 p.m. at August/A.R.T. Stadium. WSU returns to Pac-10 play Friday, when they make their first appearance of the season at Bailey-Brayton Field with a three-game set with Stanford. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
