Cougars Fall At UC-Irvine 4-0
March 29, 2003
IRVINE, Calif. -- - Washington State's offense generated just four hits as the Cougars dropped a 4-0 non-conference baseball game to UC-Irvine Saturday night at Anteater Ballpark.
Bryce Chamblerin (3-2) started and took the loss for the Cougars (7-19), with Nick Kenyon finishing up in the eighth inning. Jay Miller, Steve Mortimer, Derek Bruce and Bruce Jacobsen collected WSU's four hits.
Smith (6-1) struck out 10 and walked two for the Anteaters (11-18). Jon Horwitz carried the big bat for UC-Irvine, collecting three singles and a triple. Mark Wagner had two hits for the Anteaters, both doubles.
The Anteaters turned three double plays in the first five innings and in each case halted potential WSU rallies with one out.
Derek Bruce's sixth inning double provided WSU its best chance at scoring, but a strike out and two groundouts failed to advance him to third. In the ninth, Smith walked pinch hitter Robert Stahlke and Miller with two outs, but then forced Jeremy Farrar into a game-ending groundout to short.
UC-Irvine scored once in the first inning on a double by Wagner and then again in the fifth when Horwitz tripled and came home on a groundout. The Anteater's final two runs came in the eighth, one on a bases loaded walk and the other Horwitz's single.
The two teams conclude their three-game weekend series with a noon game Sunday at Anteater Stadium.
