March 28, 2010
PULLMAN, Wash. - Mike McCarthy tossed an eight-hit shutout and Cal State Bakersfield defeated Washington State 3-0 in nonconference baseball, Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field. With the victory, the Roadrunners (11-11) earned a split of the four-game weekend series. The Cougars (14-7) were 2-for-15 with men on base, including 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and stranded 10. "We had our opportunities," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We had a runner at third and less than two out three times and didn't get a run. Credit (Mike) McCarthy for shutting us down." Jason Kudlock, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI, doubled in the first run of the game in the top of the fifth and Brandon Boren added a run-scoring single to give Cal State Bakersfield a 2-0 lead off Travis Cook (0-1). Kudlock added a home run in the ninth against Adam Conley. The Cougars had a runner at third in each of the first-three innings and a man on base in seven of the nine frames against McCarthy (2-2). WSU travels to Spokane, Tuesday to play Gonzaga at 6:30 p.m. WSU NOTES
