Cougars Pound UC Irvine 8-4

IRVINE, Calif. -- - Washington State, behind a complete-game performance from pitcher Tony Banaszak, beat host UC Irvine 8-4 Friday night at Anteater Ballpark.
Banaszak (1-6) allowed nine hits and four runs, while striking out five, to notch his first win of the season. Glenn Swanson (1-4) threw 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits in the losing effort.
At the plate, Jon Baeder led the Cougars with three hits, while Jay Miller, Grant Richardson and Collin Henderson added two hits each. Bruce Jacobsen added a team-high two RBI for WSU (7-18). Three players had multiple-hit games for the Anteaters (10-18).
WSU opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Baeder singled to third base, scoring Richardson. The next batter, Jacobsen, hit a double to centerfield, plating Robert Stahlke and Derek Bruce.
UC Irvine responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, pulling to within one run.
WSU added two more runs in the top of the second. With Henderson on second base, Miller singled to right field, plating Henderson. Then, with the bases loaded, Stahlke was walked by Swanson, scoring Jeremy Farrar from third base, giving the Cougars a 5-2 lead.
The Anteaters added two runs in the bottom of the third, cutting the WSU lead to 5-4.
The Cougars added a single run in the top of the fifth, when Farrar's single brought home Baeder.
WSU gave itself a late cushion, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh. With Baeder on second and Henderson on first, Farrar reached on an error by third baseman Kyle Ryckebosch, allowing both runners to score.
The two teams continue the series Saturday night with a 6 p.m. start. The Cougars are expected to start sophomore Bryce Chamberlin (3-1) on the mound.
