Cougars Win Second Game of the Day
March 26, 2012
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Washington State scored four times in the first inning and cruised to an 11-1 victory at Long Beach State in nonconference baseball, Monday night at Blair Field.
The victory was the second of the day for the Cougars (12-10). Washington State won 10-4 in a Pac-12 game at No. 6 UCLA, Monday afternoon after that game was postponed due to rain, Sunday.
"It was not easy to do what our kids did today," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "To beat a top 10 team convincingly, get on a bus and play that well tonight is a great accomplishment."
The Cougars jumped on Long Beast State (8-15) starter Nick Sabo (0-4) for a run two batters into the game on a double by Jason Monda and an RBI-single by Tommy Richards. With one out, Derek Jones singled. When the ball was misplayed in right field, Richards came around to score and Jones went to third. Adam Nelubowich followed with a run-scoring single and Patrick Claussen capped the rally with a two-out RBI-double.
In the fifth, Washington State added three runs against reliever Edgar Gomez. The Cougars loaded the bases with one out on a walk to Nelubowich, a pinch hit single by Nate Blackham and Claussen's hit by pitch. P.J. Jones brought home Nelubowich with a sacrifice fly and Ian Sagdal drilled a two-run double to put Washington State on top 7-0.
The Cougars added two runs in the sixth for a 9-0 advantage. Derek Jones singled with one out and Nelubowich was hit by a pitch. After a ground out by Blackham, Claussen delivered a two-run single.
In the seventh, pinch hitter Jordan Copeland singled with two out and raced around to score on a double by Ard. In the eighth, Nelubowich led off with a single. With one out, Claussen and P.J. Jones collected back-to-back singles to bring home the final Washington State run.
Freshman Tanner Chleborad (1-0) fired six-shutout innings, gave up four hits, walked three and struck out seven. Richie Ochoa, Kellen Camus and Anthony Drobnick combined for the final-nine outs with Camus giving up a run in the eighth.
