PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State overcame a six-run deficit in the nightcap of a doubleheader and defeated Cal State Bakersfield 13-12 to earn a split in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

The Roadrunners (10-11) won the opener 9-5 and led 6-0 after a half inning in game two. Washington State (14-6) responded with five runs in its half of the first, four on a grand slam by Shea Vucinich.

Cal State Bakersfield added a run in the third inning, but Matt Fanelli tied the game with a two-run home run in the home half of the fifth.

The Cougars took the lead in the sixth on a RBI-ground out by Cody Bartlett and a run-scoring double by Brett Jacobs. Richie Ochoa pitched four and two-thirds innings of relief of starter Bret DeRooy and left after the sixth inning with WSU on top 9-7.

The Roadrunners scored three times off Seth Harvey (1-1) in the seventh to take a 10-9 lead before the Cougars rallied for four runs in their half of the frame.

With one out, Ryan Peterson tripled. After Vucinich walked, Jay Ponciano doubled home the tying run. A sacrifice fly by Bartlett gave the Cougars the lead, and three batters later Derek Jones provided some insurance with a two-run single to make the score 13-10.

In the eighth, Cal State Bakersfield had a run in and runners at the corners with no outs when Adam Conley came out of the bullpen. Conley induced a double play ball that scored a run, and a pop out to end the inning, then retired the Roadrunners 1-2-3 in the ninth for his fifth save.

"Coming from behind is a good attribute to have, but it means you are putting yourself in a hole," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We did not do enough in the first game to come back, but we showed some toughness in game two."

Mickey Jannis (3-0) scattered nine hits for a complete game win in the opener and Cal State Bakersfield chased Cougar starter Spencer Jackson (3-1) after two and two-thirds innings.

The teams conclude their four-game series, Sunday with first pitch schedule for noon.

WSU NOTES
The Cougars overcame their largest deficit (six runs) for victory at home since March 30, 2001 when they trailed UCLA 10-0 and won 12-11...Shea Vucinich hit his second-career grand slam...Seth Harvey notched his first-collegiate victory.
