Cougar Baseball Rolls Past Cal State Bakersfield

PULLMAN, Wash. - Eleven Cougars collected a hit and Washington State routed Cal State Bakersfield 14-3 in the opener of a four-game nonconference baseball series at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday. Matt Argyropoulos led a 16-hit attack with a 3-for-3 night, including a triple, three RBI and three runs. Brett Jacobs added three hits, including a double, for Washington State (13-5). The Cougars scored four times in the first inning with the big hit a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Jay Ponciano. Argyropoulos singled in a run in the second to give WSU a 5-0 lead. After both teams scored in the third, the Cougars added two runs in the fourth and six in the fifth to go on top 14-1. In the fourth, Michael Weber doubled, Argyropoulos tripled and Ryan Peterson delivered a sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Derek Jones's sacrifice fly started the scoring. Matt Fanelli doubled in two runs, J.K. Dykes singled home another and Tommy Richards capped the rally with a two-run single. Chad Arnold (3-1) went the first six innings, gave up one run on two hits, walked six and struck out three. Rusty Shellhorn pitched the final three innings to earn a save and gave up a pair of unearned runs in the ninth. "We played good early and we played bad late," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We need to play a clean nine innings when we get into Pac-10 play and tonight we didn't do that." The series continues with a doubleheader, Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. WSU NOTES
