BERKELEY, Calif. -- - The Washington State baseball team dropped the second game of the three-game Pacific-10 Conference series against California 11-4 Friday at Evans Diamond in Berekeley. The Bears now lead the series 2-0.

WSU (15-12, 0-2 Pac-10) starting pitcher Wayne Daman Jr. (4-1) earned his first loss in nine appearances of the season. The sophomore went five innings surrendering nine runs, six earned, on eight hits. Jayson Miller threw two innings, while Brett Sommer closed out the game, allowing one hit in one inning of work.

Adam Gold (4-2), Cal's (18-9, 2-0 Pac-10) starter earned the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits in six innings of work. Relievers Matt Swanson, Alex Trafton and Travis Talbott held the Cougars scoreless, allowing only one hit in the final three innings of the game.

WSU posted its first runs of the game in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Brady Everett. The long ball was Everett's team-leading seventh of the season, as well as his fifth multiple-run homer this season.

The Cougars added runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Zach Kosturos scored in the fifth when he Jason Freeman plated him on a ground out. In the sixth, Kosturos grounded into a double play that scored Jimmy Murphy.

The Bears scored their first run in the bottom of the third on a double by Mike Van Winden that drove home Garrett Bussiere from second. Cal added four more runs in the fourth, to regain the lead. The first run of the inning came on a single by Allen Craig. Kyle Spraker went yard with a three-run homer to left field to score the remaining runs.

 

 

Cal continued its scoring with a run in the fifth with a solo home run by Chris Errecart. The Bears posted five more runs in the sixth following four singles, a double, two errors and a fielder's choice.

WSU's Nick Cebula (2-2) is expected to get the start Saturday as the Cougars look to avoid the three-game sweep Saturday when they take on Cal at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond in Berkeley.
