Jay Miller Records Four Hits In Win Over Utah Valley State

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State's Jay Miller went 4-for-5 including a two-run home run to help the Cougar baseball team defeat Utah Valley State 16-13 Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field. WSU took the series from the Wolverines 3-1.
Nick Cebula (2-2) earned the win in his first start of the season on the mound for the Cougars (15-10). Cebula pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits, while striking out four. Steve Kost and Dane Renkert also saw time out of the pen for WSU.
UVSC's (6-16) starting pitcher Kyle Tash (1-4) took the loss allowing six runs, five earned, on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Miller led WSU at the plate driving home four runs on four hits while scoring three times. The left fielder, who was a double away from hitting for the cycle, recorded singles in the first and fourth innings, a two-run homer in the second and a triple in the fifth. For the series against the Wolverines, Miller hit a team-leading .688 average with six runs batted in and six runs scored.
The Cougars posted their runs early in the game, but were unable to hold the Wolverines from scoring in the later innings. WSU got on the board in the first when Jason Freeman scored on a wild pitch and Miller was plated on a sacrifice fly by Brady Everett. In the second WSU added six runs to take an early lead with a run-scoring double by Matt Thomas, a two-run double by Freeman and Miller's two-run homer to left field.
WSU added three runs in both the fourth and the fifth and its final two runs of the game in the sixth. In the fourth, Miller drove home a run with his second single of the day. Everett went yard with a two-run home run to left during the next at-bat. Everett now leads with the Cougars with six home runs this season. The three runs in the fifth came on a two-run double by Kaeo Rubin, who then scored on Miller's triple. The final two WSU runs came on doubles by Zach Kosturos and Thomas.
UVSC started its scoring in the fourth when Dan Bulow hit a three-run home run to center. The homer by Bulow was his third in the past two days. The Wolverines added a two more runs in the sixth with a solo long ball by Trent Perry and a fielding error that scored Kory Drew.
The Wolverines posted three runs in both the seventh and eighth to bring the score to 16-11. The runs in the seventh resulted from a double, a single and a sacrifice fly. In the eighth, Perry hit a two-run double and was then plated on a single by Todd Bateman. UVSC scored two runs in the final inning with a sacrifice fly and a passed ball.
The Cougars will begin Pacific-10 Conference action Thursday when they take on the California Bears in a three game series at Evans Diamond at Berkeley, Calif. Game times are set for 2 p.m. Thursday with Friday and Saturday's games starting at 1 p.m.
