WICHITA, Kan. - Ryan Jones hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning and No. 25 Wichita State beat Washington State 5-3 in the opening game of a three-game nonconference series, Friday.

Jones's game-winner came off WSU (11-5) reliever Seth Harvey (0-1) and made a winner out of Wichita State (11-5) reliever Remington Johnson (1-0) who recorded the final out in the top of the inning.

Washington State trailed 3-0 entering the top of the ninth, before tying the game with a two-out rally. Jay Ponciano doubled and scored on a Shea Vucinich single against TJ McGreevy. Vucinich took second on the play via an error. Tommy Richards delivered a pinch-hit double to score Vucinich and Patrick Claussen tied the game with a single. In the bottom of the frame, Cody Lassley singled with one out prior to the Jones home run.

Wichita State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning with three singles, a sacrifice bunt, a throwing error by the Cougars and a ground out. All of that came against WSU starter Chad Arnold. Wichita State's Jordan Cooper blanked the Cougars for seven and two-thirds innings.

Due to expected poor weather, Friday's start time was moved up. If the teams can play, Saturday, first pich is scheduled for noon Pacific.

WSU NOTES
The two runs given up by Seth Harvey were the first against the righ-hander in nine appearances and 10 and one-third innings this season...reliever Paris Shewey lowered his ERA to a team-best 2.12...freshman Brett Jacobs took over the team batting average lead at .439.
