Cougs Drop 6-5 10i Game to OSU
March 17, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State pushed across the winning run in the tenth inning Sunday for a 6-5 non-conference baseball win over Washington State at Goss Stadium and a sweep of the three-game series.
Jared Sanders (1-1), OSU's sixth pitcher, picked up the victory for the Beavers (13-7), throwing the final two innings.
The Cougars held leads of 1-0 after three innings and 5-4 in the ninth, but each time Oregon State battled back and finally scored the deciding run in the tenth.
Chris Biles led off the tenth inning with a single and later moved to third on Paul Richie's single to center, setting the stage for the winning run. Gorrell intentionally walked Hudson to load the bases with one out, then Cougar coach Tim Mooney called on Bryce Chamberlin to face Seth Pietsch. The Beaver left fielder promptly greeted him with a sharp single to left, sending Biles home and ending the game.
"We walked eight batters today and we can't do that," offered Mooney. "We also can't squander opportunities when we have the chance to score. Right now we are playing hard and we are close to getting the wins, but like today, we have to do a better job of scoring when we have runners on base, and we need to hold leads when we have them."
After OSU picked up a pair of runs in the fourth for a 2-1 lead, WSU evened the score with another unearned run, this time in the fifth. Tyson Boston reached base on an error and later scored when Collin Henderson's grounder to shortstop was not fielded cleanly.
In the seventh, WSU scored twice for a 4-2 lead when Andrusco's double scored Steve Mortimer and Henderson's single plated Andrusco as WSU took the lead.
After Oregon State pulled even with two runs in the seventh on Runyon's two-run home run, the Cougars went back on top in the eighth when Jeff LaRue doubled with one out and scored on a Jon Baeder single, putting WSU on top 5-4.
Walks hurt Gorrell in the ninth as the host club drew even 5-5. After striking out Will Hudson, Pietsch and Runyon worked Gorrell for walks and Brian Barden singled home Hudson, sending the game into a tenth inning.
Washington State completes its road trip to Oregon Monday with a 3:00 p.m. single game against the Portland Pilots.
