March 13, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - Jayson Miller and Garrett Kimbrel combined on a four-hit shutout and Zach Borba added three hits as Washington State defeated Rider, 11-0, in the series-finale Tuesday evening at Bailey-Brayton Field.
With the win the Cougars have won eight of their past 11 games, three by shutout, and improve to 10-6 on the season. WSU has also won all four series-ending games this season, all coming after dropping the series opener. Rider falls to 2-7 overall.
WSU scored in five of its first six innings to put the game away early. Scott Suttmeier had an RBI single in the first and Simi Reynolds added another in the second for the 2-0 lead. Three more runs in the fourth broke the game open as Borba had an RBI single and Paul Gran's fifth double of the season brought home Reynolds for a 5-0 lead.
That was more than enough for Miller, who cruised through six innings, allowing three hits, all singles, with three strikeouts. Miller faced just one batter over the minimum as he picked up his first win of the season. Kimbrel threw three innings of effective relief to pick up his first career save, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts as he only faced nine batters.
Borba's RBI single in the fifth was the first of four runs in the frame as WSU sent nine men to the plate. Suttmeier, Reynolds and Cody Bartlett all had RBIs and WSU collected five hits in the inning. Borba capped his night with an RBI double in the sixth as he finished 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs.
In all the Cougars collected 12 hits as Reynolds, Suttmeier and Gran all had two. Suttmeier also drove in three runs while Reynolds drove in two and scored twice.
Rider managed four hits on the night, led by a pair of singles from catcher Sean Olson. Starter Mike Dyszel suffered his third loss of the season as he lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits. He was the first of five Rider pitchers in the game.
The Cougars continue their six-game homestand this Friday against Illinois-Chicago. It marks the first of a three-game series against the Flames with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
