Cougars Earn Split with Dallas Baptist
March 8, 2011
PULLMAN, Wash. - Derek Jones doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead Washington State past Dallas Baptist 8-7 in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Tuesday. "We needed a win any way we could get it," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "It certainly wasn't pretty, but we found a way." The Cougars (6-4) took a 4-1 lead after two innings scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two frames. An RBI-double by Jones and a sacrifice fly by Cody Bartlett in the first gave Washington State a 2-0 lead. After the Patriots (8-5) scored once in the top of the second, the Cougars answered when Jones drilled a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. Dallas Baptist took a 5-4 lead with a four-run fifth against Washington State reliever Spencer Jackson. The Cougars responded immediately with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Brett Jacobs tied the game with a run-scoring single and the go-ahead run came home on a ground out by Jason Monda. Taylor Ard capped the rally with a two-run single to put Washington State on top 8-5. The Patriots picked up an unearned run in the seventh against Richie Ochoa (1-0) and another unearned run in the eighth off Paris Shewey who recorded the final-six outs for his second save. Washington State concludes its homestand with a three-game series against Utah Valley beginning Friday at 5:30 p.m. The series will be carried on KQQQ NewsTalk 1150 AM. COUGAR NOTES
