WSU Drops Series Finale to Washington 8-1

SEATTLE, Wash. - - Washington State was held to two hits in an 8-1 non-conference loss Sunday to cross-state rival Washington at Husky Ballpark.

Karl Mejlholm (1-2) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and five runs in the losing effort for WSU (3-13). Trevor Gibson (1-0) threw six innings, allowing one run on two hits. Brian Carter finished up for the Huskies (9-6), pitching three hitless innings.

At the plate, Jeff LaRue and Jon Baeder collected WSU's only hits of the game. Washington had four players with two hits each, led by Taylor Johnson's two-home run day.

The Cougars fell behind early, with the Huskies taking a 5-0 lead after four innings. WSU's lone score came in the top of the fifth inning, when Baeder's single through the left side plated LaRue, who had reached on a double earlier in the inning.

Washington added one run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Next action for the Cougars will be a two-game non-conference series Friday and Saturday against Oregon State at Tri-City Stadium in Pasco. Both games begin at 1:00 p.m.
