Cougars Drop 11-8 Game at Washington
March 7, 2003
SEATTLE, Wash. -- - An 11-hit attack and outstanding plate performances by Grant Richardson and Derek Bruce were not enough Friday evening as Washington State dropped a non-conference match-up against rival Washington 11-8 at Husky Ballpark.
The game, slated to start at 6:30 p.m., was delayed 45 minutes because of rain.
Sean White (1-3) pitched six innings, allowing four runs on five hits to notch the win for the Huskies (7-6). Will Fenton pitched the ninth to record his third save of the season. Bryce Chamberlin (2-1) allowed eight runs and 11 hits in five innings and took the loss for WSU (3-11).
The Cougars were led at the plate by Richardson's 4-for-4, two-RBI day. Bruce added three hits for WSU. Tila Reynolds, Kyle Larsen and John Otness had three hits each for Washington.
WSU jumped out to a 4-2 after three innings.
In the top of the first inning, Bruce scored on a fielding error by Husky centerfielder Simi Reynolds. In the second, Jeff LaRue, who reached on another error by Reynolds, scored when Jon Baeder grounded out to shortstop. WSU plated two more runs in the third inning, when consecutive singles by Bruce Jacobsen and LaRue plated Bruce and Grant Richardson, respectively.
Washington took a 10-4 lead after six innings, scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth, four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.
The Cougars trimmed their deficit to 10-7 with three runs in the top of the seventh. After Justin Hart's triple, Jay Miller singled up the middle, plating Hart. After Robert Stahlke walked, Bruce singled to score Miller. Richardson then singled to score Stahlke from second base.
The Huskies added a run in the eighth, taking an 11-7 lead.
WSU attempted to rally in the ninth, when with two outs, Richardson doubled to right centerfield to plate Bruce. But Fenton got the next batter, Jacobsen, to ground out to second base to end the game
The three-game series continues Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. single game at Husky Ballpark. WSU is expected to start Tony Banaszak (0-3) on the mound.
