With the help of freshman Justin McClure's grand slam home run and Bryce Chamberlin's career high 11 strikeouts, Washington State beat Utah Valley State 17-2 Saturday, at Harris Field in the third day of action of the Banana Belt Baseball Tournament.

Chamberlin (3-0) pitched an eight inning complete game for WSU (9-3), allowing two runs, one earned. Jed Jensen (0-2) took the loss for UVSC (1-6), giving up nine runs, five earned, in 4.1 innings.

"Once again I was very happy with our pitching," WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. "It was also great to see McClure get another great hit for us."

WSU took a 10-2 lead with eight runs in the fifth inning. The Cougars rally was aided by three Wolverine errors, four hits and a school record eight stolen bases. Jason Freeman, Jay Miller, and Zach Franklin all drove in runs in the fifth.

WSU's eight stolen bases in the game is three shy of the school record of 11 set in 1917.

In the sixth inning McClure hit his second home run of the tournament to give WSU a 14-2 lead.

Washington State added three additional runs in the seventh inning when Dusty Druffel, in his first at-bat as a Cougar, stroked a bases-loaded triple to the right field corner.

WSU's Kaeo Rubin scored in the first inning with a single, two wild pitches and an error.

Grant Richardson drove home Jay Miller, who walked, with a double in the fourth as the Cougars regained the lead after the Wolverines tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth with a run resulting from a passed ball.

Jeff Broadhead scored the final run for UVSC with a RBI triple in the fifth.

The game was called at the end of eight innings because of tournament time limit.

WSU will conclude tournament play with a double header Sunday. The Cougs play Gonzaga at 11 a.m. and host Lewis-Clark State at 2 p.m. at Harris Field.
