PULLMAN, Wash. - Cal State Northridge scored five times in the top of the third inning and defeated Washington State 5-3 in nonconference baseball, Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

With the victory, the Matadors (5-6) salvaged the final meeting in the four-game series with the Cougars (8-3). Washington State saw its eight-game winning streak snapped, and finished its eight-game homestand at 7-1.

"We didn't play good defense today," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We also made some mistakes running the bases and didn't do enough at the plate. We feel pretty good about a 7-1 homestand, but it's not 8-0."

Washington State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Yale's Rosen's two-run home run, his fourth of the season. Cal State Northridge answered with a five-run third against Cougar starter Kyle Swannack (1-1), including a pair of home runs.

In the bottom of the third, Trek Stemp led off with a double and took third on a bunt single by Collin Slaybaugh. Nick Tanielu followed with an infield single to plate Stemp and cut the Cougar deficit to 5-3. Matador starter Brandon Warner (1-0) squelched the rally by retiring the next-three hitters on balls in the air.

The Cougars open a seven-game road trip, Friday against UTSA in San Antonio. First pitch is schedule for 6 p.m. Central/4 p.m. Pacific.
