PULLMAN, Wash. - Jason Monda's three-run double highlighted a five-run fifth inning as Washington State defeated Cal State Northridge 7-4 in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

The win was the third-straight in the series for the Cougars (8-2) and their eighth-straight overall. Washington State goes for a four-game series sweep of the Matadors (4-6), Sunday with first pitch scheduled at noon.

"We've found different ways to win games in this series," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We weren't sharp today, but we had a lot of good things happen. Our guys fell behind and never doubted they were going to come back."

The Cougars trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Adam Nelubowich drove in Monda with a two-out, RBI-double. In the fifth, Washington State again rallied with two outs and provided enough offense for Tanner Chleborad (2-1) to pick up the victory on the mound.

Ben Roberts led off the fifth with a single. Trace Tam Sing followed with a single that sent Roberts to third with Tam Sing taking second on the throw. After Trek Stemp struck out, Collin Slaybaugh did the same, but Slaybaugh reached on an error to load the bases.

Nick Tanielu struck out, but Monda picked him up with a bases-clearing shot to the left-center field gap off Cal State Northridge starter Calvin Copping (1-2). Yale Rosen and Nelubowich each followed with a run-scoring double to give the Cougars a 6-2 lead.

The Matadors added a run in the seventh off Chleborad, who struck out six in 6 1/3 innings. Washington State got the run back in the eighth inning on Nelubowich's second home run of the season.

Cal State Northridge scratched out an unearned run against Monda in the ninth, but J.D. Leckenby recorded the final-two outs to earn his fourth save.
