Cougar Baseball Wins Fifth-Straight Game
March 2, 2012
PULLMAN, Wash. - Sophomore J.D. Leckenby pitched into the eighth inning and redshirt-junior Taylor Ard homered as Washington State defeated Northern Colorado 8-2 in nonconference baseball, Friday. Leckenby (2-1) logged 7 2/3 innings, gave up one run on six hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter while earning the victory for a second-consecutive start. He threw 84 pitches, including 61 for strikes. "J.D. was sharp and was throwing the ball down," Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Offensively, we didn't score a lot early, but we extended some innings with two-out rallies." Washington State (6-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second against Northern Colorado (0-5) starter Joe Willman (0-2). Senior Derek Jones singled to open the frame and moved to second on a passed ball with one out. Senior Tommy Richard followed with a single to plate Jones. In the third, Ard launched a two-out solo home run over the centerfield wall for his second dinger of the season and extend the Cougars' advantage to 2-0. Washington State added a run in the sixth on a two-out walk to Richards and a double off the wall in right-center field by senior Patrick Claussen. Leckenby left in the eighth with a 3-0 lead and a runner on second with two outs. After senior Spencer Jackson hit the only man he faced, the Bears collected a pair of singles against sophomore Kellen Camus to trim their deficit to 3-2. The Cougars responded in the bottom of the eighth with five runs as the first-nine men to come to the plate reached. Ard led off with a double, Jones tripled and redshirt-sophomore Adam Nelubowich singled to put Washington State on top 5-2. After sophomore pinch runner Nate Blackham stole second, Richards singled and Claussen doubled home Blackham. A balk brought in Richards and freshman Ian Sagdal singled to score Claussen and cap the rally. The series continues, Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon. GAME NOTES
