PULLMAN, Wash. - Redshirt freshman Nick Tanielu drove in six while the Cougar offense scored 25 runs on the afternoon as for the second straight day Washington State swept a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan, winning 13-10 and 12-2, Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

With the victories to Cougars have won five straight and improve to 5-2 on the season while the Eagles fall to 1-5.

In the day's first game, the Cougars jumped out early, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings. After singling in the first and coming around to score on an error, Tanielu left no doubt in the second as he connected for a two-run home run over the wall in left, the first of his WSU career.

The Eagles responded in the third, scoring five runs on five hits and taking advantage of a Cougar error to cut the lead to 6-5. Daniel Russell had the big hit, a two-run triple to right field while Adam Sonabend added a two-run single to cap the inning.

WSU put up two in the fourth on a Tanielu RBI double and Yale Rosen's RBI single to increase the lead to 8-5 then extended it to 9-5 in the sixth. EMU took its lone lead of the four-game series in the seventh, powered by Jamie Simpson's three-run home run off Cougar reliever Matt Bower, capping a five-run inning and giving the Eagles a 10-9 lead.

The Cougars answered in the eighth as redshirt freshman Ben Roberts tied the game on a one out, pinch-hit home run to right. Following an Ian Sagdal pinch-hit double and Tanielu being hit by pitch, Jason Monda connected for his second home run of the season, capping a four-run inning and giving WSU its final margin of victory.

For the game Tanielu had three hits, four RBI and four runs scored, while Trek Stemp had three hits and four runs scored and Rosen added three hits and three RBI. Senior Ritchie Ochoa, the fifth of six pitchers used in the game for WSU, collected the final two outs of the eighth inning to pick up his first win of the season. J.D. Leckenby worked a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year.

In the nightcap the Cougars scored three in the first on a Roberts three-run double and never looked back, taking advantage of four Eagle errors. The two teams traded runs in the second and fourth as WSU took a 4-2 lead into the sixth before blowing the game open with a six-run frame. The Cougars capitalized on two Eagle errors in the inning as Monda and Sagdal each had RBI singles to account for the only two hits in the sixth.

The Cougars added another run in the eighth when pinch-hitter JJ Robinson's RBI single to right scored Sagdal for the final run of the game. Kellen Camus picked up his second victory of the season by throwing two hitless innings in the contest while Monda and Collin Slaybaugh led the way at the plate with two hits each to go along with Roberts three RBI. Monda also pitched 1.1 innings in relief, registering two strikeouts.

Washington State continues its eight-game homestand Thursday against Cal State Northridge at Bailey-Brayton Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

COUGAR NOTES
WSU swept two doubleheaders against the same team in the same season for the first time since doing so against Portland State (April 25 and April 26, 1997)... Richie Ochoa picked up his eighth-career relief victory, tied for sixth in WSU history...Ben Roberts pinch-hit home run was the first of its kind by a Cougar since Adam Nelubowich, May 14, 2011 against Arizona...the last time WSU scored 10-plus runs in back-to-back games was March 26, 2012, when it defeated No. 6 UCLA, 10-4, then later that night beat Long Beach State, 11-1, both games coming on the road...redshirt freshman Nick Tanielu hit .500 (8-16) for the series, with two doubles, two triples, a home run, seven RBI and eight runs scored.
