Cougars fall to Spartans 12-0
Feb. 23, 2003
SAN JOSE, Calif. - - Washington State did not have an answer against a sterling pitching effort by San Jose State starter Matt Winck in a 12-0 loss Sunday at Municipal Stadium.
Winck (1-0) threw a complete-game, nine-hitter, striking out six and walking none to notch his first win of the season. For WSU, starter Aaron MacKenzie (0-1) pitched six innings and allowed three runs on six hits in the losing effort.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 1-8 on the season. The Spartans improved to 6-5.
The game was tightly contested for much of the afternoon. The Spartans scored one run in the bottom of the second and added two more in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 3-0 lead after six innings. SJSU, however, broke out with seven runs in the seventh and added two more scores in the eighth.
The Cougars return to action next weekend in Lewiston, Idaho, in the Banana Belt Tournament. WSU opens the four-day tournament against BYU Thursday at noon at Harris Field.
