WSU Drops 7-2 Game to Pepperdine
Feb. 22, 2002
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Cougars Derek Bruce and Justin Hart, with two hits each, couldn't overcome Pepperdine's 14-hit attack as the Waves picked up a 7-2 win over Washington State in the opening round of the Texas A&M Continental Classic at Olsen Field Friday.
Starter Garrett Alwert (1-1) went seven innings, allowing 14 hits and seven runs in the losing effort. Brandon Boesch (2-1) pitched six innings of six-hit, one-run ball to pick up the win.
"Garrett didn't pitch poorly, but he wasn't as sharp as he had been," WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. "His fastball wasn't what he needed. Their starter pitched real well. You have to give him credit. His fastball was effective and he didn't walk anyone. He made us earn everything."
WSU was held to seven hits on the day and left eight men on base.
The Cougars, though, trailed only 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning. But Alwert struggled, allowing a two-run home run to Ed Montague and an RBI double to Patrick Rooney.
"The home run and three runs in the seventh really hurt us," Mooney said.
Pepperdine scored two runs in the first inning and another in the top of the fourth to jump out to a 3-0 lead. WSU answered in its half of the fourth when Derek Bruce's RBI single scored Jeff LaRue. WSU's final run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh, when Jon Baeder scored on a fielder's choice to provide the final margin.
WSU will play a doubleheader Saturday in the second day of the four-day tournament. The Cougars will meet Kentucky at 11 a.m. and host Texas A&M at 3 p.m.
