Feb. 21, 2010
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State pounded out 23 hits and five pitchers combined to shut out Seattle in a 23-0 nonconference baseball win at Bailey-Brayton Field, Sunday.
David Stilley (1-0) pitched the first-four innings and earned the win in a controlled start. He gave up four hits, walked two and struck out one. Michael Ratigan, Seth Harvey and Spencer Jackson each pitched an inning in relief and Adam Conley recorded the final six outs, including four strikeouts.
"We had the opportunity to play a lot of guys that day and everyone performed offensively," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We threw more strikes today, but we still have work to do."
Jones started the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-run triple. An error followed to allow Jones to score and WSU led 3-0. Vucinich blasted a solo home run in the second and Matt Fanelli's three-run double highlighted a seven-run third to make the score 11-0.
Peterson drove in a run with a ground out in the fourth and Patrick Claussen drove home two of the Cougars' three runs in the fifth with a single.
A home run by Peterson and a RBI-single by Kyle Buchanan were part of a four-run sixth and WSU closed the scoring with a four-run eighth inning.
The Cougars travel to Lubbock, Texas for the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic, Feb. 26-28.
