Cougars lose 4-0 at San Jose State
Feb. 21, 2003 SAN JOSE, Calif. - - Washington State could not find its offense in a 4-0 loss against San Jose State Friday at Municipal Stadium. WSU starter Tony Banaszak (0-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits in the losing effort. Spartans' starter Matt Durkin (3-0) pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits in notching the win. The Cougars (0-7) had just six players reach base against Durkin. First baseman Grant Richardson led WSU at the plate, going 2-for-3. Kevin Frandsen led SJSU (5-4) with a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance. The game was tight throughout and was scoreless until the bottom of fourth inning, when the Spartans pushed two runs across. SJSU added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Cougars best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth, when Robert Stahlke and Richardson both reached on singles. But WSU could not capitalize, as Richardson was putout at second on a fielder's choice to end the inning. The two teams continue the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
