LONG BEACH, Calif. - - Washington State could not complete a late rally against host Long Beach State, dropping the final game of the series 9-4 Sunday at Blair Field.

The Cougars (0-6) trailed 5-2 after seven innings, before the 49ers (6-3) tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth. WSU responded with two runs in the top of the ninth, but couldn't quite complete the comeback effort.

WSU starter Brandon Hundt (0-2) pitched six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits in the losing effort. Matt Paz (1-1) threw 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits to notch the win.

The Cougars were led at the plate by third baseman Bruce Jacobsen, who was 2-for-4, while scoring two runs. The 49ers were led by centerfielder Josh Buhagiar's 2-for-4, four-RBI day.

WSU got out to an early lead, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning on Robert Stahlke's RBI single that plated Zapper McGrath.

LBSU responded with one run each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars tied the game in the top of the fifth, when Jacobsen scored on a fielder's choice.

The tie was short-lived, as the 49ers added a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth, before opening up a seven-run lead with four runs in the eighth.

WSU engineered the start of a rally in the top of the ninth. Steve Mortimer, who reached on a single earlier in the inning, scored on a throwing error by 49er shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, cutting the LBSU lead to 9-3. Jacobsen then scored on Collin Henderson's sacrifice fly to right field. But the following batter, McGrath, flied out to centerfield to end the Cougar rally.

The Cougars return to the road next weekend for a three-game series at San Jose State. Game one is slated for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Municipal Stadium.
