Cougars Fall 17-7 At Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. - - Washington State could not hold a one-run lead in the fifth inning, surrendering 12 runs in the game's final four innings, in a 17-7 loss to host Pacific Sunday at Billy Hebert Field.
With the win, the Tigers (5-2) swept WSU (0-3) in the three-game series. Jason Godkin (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing one run on two hits to notch the win. Brandon Hundt (0-1) pitched four innings in relief of starter Greg Goetz and gave up four runs on four hits to receive the loss.
Robert Stahlke led the Cougars at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBI. Jon Baeder also added two hits for WSU. Four Pacific players had two hits each and centerfielder Josh Snook led the Tigers with a 3-for-3 performance.
The Cougars got on the board in the top of the first inning, when Grant Richardson's single to centerfield brought home Jay Miller. But the Tigers responded in their half of the inning with five runs.
WSU cut the Pacific lead to 5-3 with a two-run second inning. Derek Bruce led-off the inning with a triple and scored two batters later on a Baeder single. Bruce Jacobsen, who reached after being hit by a pitch, scored following Justin Hart's single to centerfield.
The Cougars took their first lead in the top of the fifth, behind a three-run burst. After Collin Henderson reached on a single and Miller on an error, Stahlke tripled to right centerfield to plate both runners. Stahlke then scored when Richardson was caught in a rundown between first and second, giving WSU a 6-5 lead.
Pacific responded in its half of the fifth, scoring four runs and following with two more scores in the bottom of the sixth, taking an 11-6 lead.
WSU added a run in the top of the seventh, when Bruce's sacrifice fly to left field allowed Miller to score.
The Tigers added one run in the bottom of the seventh and five in the top of the eighth, putting the game out of reach.
The Cougars return to the road next week with a three-game set at Long Beach State. The series opener is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start Friday at Blair Field.
