Cougs Drop 8-7 Game To Pacific
Feb. 8, 2003
STOCKTON, Calif. -- - Washington State's rally fell short against host Pacific, as the Tigers scored in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat the Cougars 8-7 Saturday at Billy Hebert Field.
The Cougars (0-2) scored four runs in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings after the Tigers (4-2) had taken a 7-2 lead through six innings.
Andy Willick (2-0) pitched the game's final three innings for Pacific, allowing two hits and one run to notch the win. Brett Beetham (0-1) got the loss for WSU, going 4 1/3 innings, while giving up just one run on two hits. Aaron MacKenzie started on the mound for the Cougars, allowing four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
WSU was led at the plate by shortstop Derek Bruce, who went 3-for-5 and had hit his first home run of the season, a solo blast in the fourth inning. Grant Richardson also had a homer, a three-run shot in the seventh inning. Justin Hart was the third Cougar to go deep with a solo homer in the third inning. Four Pacific players had two hits each.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second on Josh Snook's RBI double to left centerfield that plated Nate McCall. WSU tied the game the next inning on Hart's blast.
The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth on Bruce's home run, but the lead was short-lived as Pacific answered in its half of the fourth to tie the game.
The Tigers then exploded for five run in the bottom of the fifth, before WSU responded in the top of the seventh. The Cougar scoring began on Jon Baeder' single up the middle that scored Jay Miller. After Justin Hart walked, Richardson, pinch-hitting for Zapper McGrath, homered to cut the Pacific lead to 7-6.
WSU forced extra innings in the top of the ninth. Robert Stahlke led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Baeder. Hart then grounded out to third base, allowing Stahlke to score.
The Cougars could manage only a walk in the top of the 11th, before the Tigers pulled out the win in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Eric Elliot that scored Sekiya.
The team complete the three-game series tomorrow at noon.
