October 4, 1997
MISSOULA, Mont. -- In their toughest test to date, Washington State's men used their front runners while the women used excellent grouping as each cross country squad placed third at the 8th Annual Mountain West Classic Saturday morning at the University of Montana Golf Course.
In men's competition, John Mortimer and Kevin Sullivan of Michigan finished one-two among scorers to lead the fifth-ranked Wolverines over fourth-ranked Oregon 48-70. The Cougar men, ranked 15th nationally, were only three points behind the Ducks' point total to earn their best finish ever at the Classic.
Former Cougar All-America Patrick Muturi, running unattached, won the men's 8,000-meter race with a time of 24 minutes, 16.8 seconds. Mortimer was the first collegiate runner with a 24:24.6 time. WSU sophomore Bernard Lagat was fourth overall and third among scored runners as he crossed in 24:45.2. Junior Jon Murray (Stanwood, Wash.) finished in 25:08.1 as the sixth collegian.
Brigham Young dominated the women's 6,000-meter competition. BYU's "A" squad won handily with 26 points while its freshmen team finished as the runner-up with 106 points. WSU's unranked women held off seventh-ranked Arizona for third place 113-129. Eighteen seconds separated WSU's five scorers.
