Women's Cross Country Named USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

March 5, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University women's cross country team is one of the best scholastic teams in NCAA Division I, the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

The Cougar women's 2008 cross country team's grade point average is 3.535, which is 30th-best among the 160 women's teams honored. For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, it must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet and have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.

"This is an exciting award because at Washington State University we encourage athletics and academic success and this team is a model of that," WSU Cross Country Head Coach Jason Drake said.

This is the fourth time the Cougar women's cross country team has earned the USTFCCCA All-Academic team honors since 1995.

Five Cougar women were selected for Pacific-10 Conference all-academic teams last fall. Sara Trané, a junior from Pixbo, Sweden, Chelsea VanDeBrake, a junior from Yakima, Wash., and Ashlee Wall, a sophomore from Walla Walla, Wash., were named to the women's first team. Trané maintains a 3.96 grade point average in psychology, VanDeBrake has a 3.97 GPA in English, and Wall has a 4.00 GPA as a pre-med, pre-dental major.

Marisa Sandoval, a senior from Los Alamos, NM, majoring in English with a 3.76 GPA, was named to the women's second team. Junior Lisa Egami, a communication major with a 3.50 GPA, from Coquitlam, British Columbia, was named to the honorable mention list.
