NEW ORLEANS -- Washington State University's outstanding distance runner Andrew Kimpel has been named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2011 Division I All-Academic Cross Country Team.

Kimpel, a sophomore from Spokane, is one of 58 male student-athletes from 36 institutions to earn the national honor. He is majoring in management information systems at WSU and has a 3.29 grade point average. Last fall Kimpel led the Cougar men's cross country team back to national rankings and was the top finisher for WSU at the Pac-12 Championships (14th), at the NCAA West Regionals (14th), and at the NCAA Championships (59th). His finish at the NCAA West Regionals earned him an All-Region honor.

Washington State is one of three Pac-12 member schools to have men on the USTFCCCA 2011 Cross Country All-Academic Team, and Kimpel is one of four Pac-12 men earning the honor this year. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2011.
