LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Washington State University sophomore Todd Wakefield finished 111th Saturday at the NCAA DI Cross Country Championships held at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

Wakefield, a middle distance specialist from Kearns, Australia, ran the 10,000 meters course in a time of 30 minutes 50.7 seconds. His split times were 5:52 at the 2k, 9:32 (3,215m), 15:01 (4,950m), 21:04 (6,910m) and 24:50 (5 miles). At the 2011 NCAA Championships Wakefield was the final scorer at 186th in a time of 31:34.8 for the Cougar men's team that finished 21st.

Wakefield placed 14th at the NCAA West Regionals in Seattle November 9, running a time of 30:01. He was one of four individuals selected from the regional for an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships.

"I'm proud of Todd and think he took big steps and ran a great race. Running 10k races back-to-back is a pretty tall order for him, being a miler," Cougar Coach Tim Riley said. "We're thrilled to be at the NCAA Championships but our goal was for him to be an All-American but there are a lot of great runners here today who did not get that goal. Todd is only a sophomore so we expect to back here next year and the year after."

Kennedy Kithuka won the individual men's title and led Oklahoma State to the team title (72 points). Wisconsin (135) and Pac-12 member Colorado (158) finished second and third. There were 245 men competing at the 2012 NCAA Championships.

Oregon (114 points) won the women's title after a protest that originally disqualified the Duck's second runner was overturned. Providence was second (183) and Stanford third (198). Iowa State's Betsy Saina won the individual women's title running the 6k course in a time of 19:27.9.
