George, Austin Lead Cougars at Pac-12 XC Championships

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Lee George and Caroline Austin were the top finishers for the Washington State cross country teams Saturday morning under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships held at the Robinson Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita, Calif.

George, a sophomore from Ferndale, Wash., led the Cougar men with a 24th place finish running the 8000m course in 24 minutes and 14 seconds. Andrew Gonzales, a junior from Kennewick, Wash., took 34th place in a time of 24:24 followed by Drew Jordan (43rd, 24:37), Todd Wakefield (49th, 24:53), Forrest Shaffer (69th, 25:38) and Richard Shroy (79th, 27:26). Senior Andrew Kimpel did not compete Saturday after suffering a leg injury earlier in the week. He is expected to recover and return to the team in time to race at the NCAA West Regional meet in Seattle, Nov. 9.

Arizona's Lawi Lalang repeated as the men's individual winner (22:49) and Colorado repeated as the men's team winners, scoring 49 points. The rest of the men's team finishers, in order, were Stanford (2nd - 82), Oregon (3rd - 105), Arizona State (4th - 109), UCLA (5th - 113), Washington (6th - 119), Arizona (7th - 166), Washington State (8th - 200), and California (9th - 234).

Austin, a senior from Chehalis, Wash., finished 34th overall in a 6000m time of 21:15. Ruby Roberts, a junior, Kingston, Wash., was the second Cougar woman to finish at 53rd overall in a time of 21:55. Freshman Emily Dwyer was 78th (22:32), followed by Courtney Zalud (94th, 23:30), Kiah Condos (96th, 23:40), CharLee Linton (99th, 23:52), and Abby Knight (106th, 25:08).

 

 

The women's individual title was won by Stanford's Kathy Kroeger in a time of 20:06. Oregon won the women's team title with 47 points followed by Arizona (2nd - 69), Stanford (3rd - 82), Washington (4th - 92), Colorado (5th - 124), UCLA (6th - 172), Utah (7th - 200), California (8th - 209), Arizona State (9th - 210), USC (10th - 295), Oregon State (11th - 305), and Washington State (12th - 308).

"Caroline had the race of the day for the women, Cougar Coach Tim Riley said. "Ruby and Emily had average days but competed well. On the men's side, not having Kimpel obviously hurt us. Lee ran very well today but I was disappointed that more of our guys weren't up there. They'll be up there in two weeks."

The WSU cross country teams will compete at the NCAA West Regional Championships, Friday afternoon, Nov. 9, at Jefferson Park in Seattle.
