PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State men's and women's teams won the dual competition at the Cougar Cross Country Invitational Saturday on the WSU Golf Course at Pullman, Wash.

Washington State men's team defeated teams from the University of Calgary, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga and Idaho while the women's team bested squads from Calgary, EWU and Gonzaga.

WSU junior Danny Wolf (Reno, Nev.) won the men's race with a time of 25 minutes, 59 seconds. Lanny Mann, running unattached, took second with WSU senior Ian Johnson (Spokane, Wash.) and junior Mike Heidt (Selah, Wash.) racing to third and fourth respectively. Johnson and Heidt were separated by just one-tenth of a second.

Cougar freshman Andrew Jones (Gillette, Wyo.) placed sixth followed by frosh teammate Matt Knoff (Pocatello, Idaho) ninth, senior Steve Barrus (Clovis, Calif.) 10th, and freshman Alex Grant (Bellingham, Wash.) 13th. Other Cougars not counting in team scoring junior Justin Ireland (Issaquah, Wash.) 15th, sophomore Reid Carrell (Spokane, Wash.) 20th, freshman Chris Williams (Federal Way, Wash.) 21st, and junior Jonathan Manthey finished 42nd.

"Danny and (Mann) were rolling. I think only one or two guys have broken 26 minutes on this course," said WSU Cross Country Coach Jason Drake. "So that's an indication of Danny's fitness, especially going out in the cold and as slow as he went out."

In the women's race, Calgary Track Club's Maria Zambrano won for the second year in a row with Shannon Slater from University of Calgary the first collegiate finisher and second overall.

WSU senior Anna Blue (Olympia, Wash.) placed third with a time of 23:15 on the 6,000m course. Juniors Ana Cabrera (Vancouver, Wash.) and Molly Bull (Oak Harbor, Wash.) took fourth and sixth respectively. Freshmen Karen DeMartini (Reno, Nev.), Natalie Smith (Bellingham, Wash.) and Katie Troy (Bellevue, Wash.) finished eighth, 11th, and 12th respectively. The Cougars final scorer, at 21st, place was sophomore Hailey Young (Kent, Wash.). Not counting in team scoring was freshman Grace Coulter (Bellingham, Wash.) in 27th.

"It was a good competition," said Blue. "From about the first 1,000 meters (Zambrano) took off. Coach told us that if somebody did that, to let them go."

"(Zambrano) won a year ago so we knew Anna was going to be in a tough race up front with her," explained Drake. "Anna did what she set out to do and ran a good time. All of the other women ran faster than we thought they would, so that's good too."
